Where it all began

A few years ago I was asked to start teaching a class on scenic set design. My m
entor, John Weygandt, coached me on my presentation. One of the things that John suggested was to leave my class with a challenge.
I had these rumblings in my soul after going to some secular art openings and studying years of magazines like Art News and Art in America. What troubled me was where are the Christian Artists with a Christian message in their work? I mean edgy, hip, memorable art. There are plenty of secular artists knocking it out of the park with their points of view, but I hadn’t seen one piece of art that has a Christian message I just can’t forget. Then I met David Segel. David shows me this new thing he put up in his office: a chair upside down on the ceiling. Coming out of the seat of the chair was this cord with a very nice glass lamp shade with a light inside. So I asked David, “What’s up with this?” David tells me that he did it because Jesus had turned his world upside down. In fact he believes that Jesus is the light of his life and the light of the world, hence the lamp. Now that image I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.
So I had my challenge for my class. I said to them “Where is all the cool Christian Artwork? Have you been to a gallery lately where you were knocked out by Christian Artwork with a powerful message?” No one had. “Where is the art work that haunts you to be more Christ like and follow Him? Hey I paint fruit and vegetables and they’re okay, and a lot of Christians paint very beautiful paintings and sculptures. But I think God is raising the bar. He’s given us a talent, but even more so, throughout our lives things have happened to grow us up in Christ. We have a message and we have the talent. The problem is right in this room. You’re a Christian and you’re an Artist. Where’s the art work? Do hear and feel God prodding you to hook those two things up and obey Him?”
So that was my challenge. I felt that, yeah I’m serving the Lord with my talent by doing scenic set designs at Willow Creek, but I’d look in the mirror and know there’s a whole lot more I could be doing. I felt like a hypocrite.
To answer those rumblings I've created paintings that I hope will start us thinking. May we get into conversations about God, who He is, and what He's doing. You can view these at http://www.donalddkrause.com
